Gravlev Ådal Route

Lace up your hiking boots and head out on the Gravlev Ådal Route – one of the most rewarding hiking routes in the area. The 11.8 km route connects the area around REGAN Vest and Rebildcentret with the Thingbæk Limestone Mines, Gravlev Sø and Rebild Bakker. Along the way, you will experience river valley landscapes, springs, forest, cultural history and views of international quality.

The Gravlev Ådal Route is one of Hærvejens Perler and is certified as a Premium Hiking Route by the German Hiking Institute. The route has also been named Denmark’s second-best hiking route by the German Hiking Institute.

Gravlev Ådal Route: A hiking experience of international quality

The Gravlev Ådal Route was inaugurated on 6 April 2025 and is a spectacular addition to Rebild’s network of hiking routes. The route takes you through some of the most varied landscapes in the area and brings together nature, history and outdoor experiences in a beautiful and memorable way.

At 11.8 km, the route is ideal if you are looking for a longer walk with plenty of variation along the way. You will pass through open landscapes, woodland, spring areas and river valley scenery – and come close to some of the area’s major cultural-historical attractions.

Planned for great nature experiences

The route is marked with red arrows and takes you through varied terrain with gravel, forest floor, grass and forest roads. Along the way, there are peaceful stretches, beautiful views and places where you can stop for a break and take in the landscape.

A special highlight is Skillingbro Undervejsbro, the 76-metre suspension bridge that connects the area around the Cold War Museum REGAN Vest and the Thingbæk Limestone Mines with the landscape around Gravlev Sø and Rebild Bakker. The bridge has been highlighted by the German Hiking Institute as both a beautiful solution and a technical highlight.

Highlights along the route

REGAN Vest and Rebildcentret: The route connects the area around REGAN Vest, Rebildcentret and the Thingbæk Limestone Mines with Rebild Bakker. Here you will encounter Cold War history, limestone mines and stories about the geology and cultural history of the landscape.

Skillingbro Undervejsbro: The 76-metre suspension bridge is one of the most distinctive points on the route. Here you experience a special transition between landscape, history and nature.

Gravlev Ådal and Gravlev Sø: The route leads you through the river valley and the landscape around Gravlev Sø, where open views, birdlife and the closeness to the water give the walk a peaceful, nature-rich character.

Rebild Bakker: The Gravlev Ådal Route meets the landscape around Rebild Bakker and crosses the Rebild Bakker Trail. If you are ready for a longer walk, the two routes can be combined into a hike of more than 25 km on trails of international quality.

Certified hiking route

The Gravlev Ådal Route is certified as a Premium Hiking Route by the German Hiking Institute and has received the Wandersiegel – a quality label for hiking routes with a particularly high-quality visitor experience. The certification highlights, among other things, the route’s variation, waymarking, distance information, information boards and the facilities at Skillingbro Naturskole.

The German Hiking Institute is behind one of Europe’s most widely used and strictest quality systems for hiking routes. The certification is therefore a strong sign that the route has been planned with a focus on nature experiences, orientation and high quality.
