The Cold War Museum REGAN Vest
Deep beneath Rold Skov lies REGAN Vest – one of Denmark’s best-preserved secrets from the Cold War. The nuclear-proof bunker was built in the 1960s and stood ready to house the government and the monarch in the event of nuclear war. Today, REGAN Vest is open as a museum, where you can get close to a hidden part of Danish history and enjoy a truly special experience in Rebild and Himmerland.

Cold War Museum REGAN Vest
The Cold War Museum REGAN Vest consists of three parts:
• An authentic Cold War bunker
• The engineer’s residence, furnished as it was in 1980
• A modern welcome building with exhibition, café and shop
The nuclear-proof bunker
The REGAN Vest bunker covers 5,500 m² and remains fully furnished with all original interiors preserved. On a guided tour, you will pass places such as the government situation room, the regent’s room, the communications department, the lounge and the canteen – all preserved as they stood, ready for use during the Cold War.
Please note: The bunker can only be visited on pre-booked guided tours. Tickets must be purchased online here.
The engineer’s residence
At the entrance to the bunker stands a yellow brick villa, which served as the official residence for the engineer responsible for the technical operation of the facility. At the same time, the villa concealed the entrance to the secret bunker complex.
Today, the house is furnished as a 1980s home. As a visitor, you are welcome to sit in the furniture, watch TV, play Pong or browse magazines from the period. The engineer’s residence gives you a vivid insight into everyday life during the Cold War.
Exhibitions, café and shop
In the museum’s welcome building, you will find a café, museum shop and a large exhibition that puts REGAN Vest and the Cold War into perspective.
The exhibition is organised thematically and offers insight into the threats of the time, Danish emergency preparedness, international politics and the bunker’s special construction. The building also includes a Cold War cinema with original film clips and news reports.
The café serves both cold and hot drinks as well as cakes, sandwiches and Danish open-faced sandwiches. If you would like to eat in the café, it is a good idea to pre-order your food when buying your ticket.
In the museum shop, you will find books, posters and unique souvenirs with a historical twist.
Explore above the bunker
Above the underground bunker complex, you can follow a marked walking trail through beautiful, hilly nature. Along the way, you will pass several visible traces of Denmark’s largest Cold War construction project.
You will pass the distinctive exhaust shafts from the bunker’s diesel generators and the characteristic air intake shafts, which still supply the facility with fresh air and also function as emergency exits.
Here, you walk directly above the nuclear-proof bunker, hidden 60 metres underground. In several places, the terrain reveals the impressive scale of the facility.
The trail is freely accessible and does not require a ticket. Access is via a staircase next to the engineer’s residence. It is an ideal way to combine a historical experience with an atmospheric walk in the heart of Rold Skov.
