The Crystal-Clear Springs

The area around Rebild is known for its springs. Thanks to the limestone beneath the ground, the water is naturally filtered, resulting in rare clarity and a constant temperature of around 7–8°C all year round.

  • Lille Blåkilde: Despite its name, this spring offers a big experience and is an important habitat for rare plants and small aquatic life.
  • Store Blåkilde: Known for its intense blue colour and almost magical appearance.
  • Ravnkilde: A beautiful spring where the water bubbles up through the gravel and flows directly into Lindenborg Å.

The water in the springs is so clean that you can drink directly from the source in several places.

Mirror-Like Lakes in Deep Forests

In Rold Forest, you will find lakes shaped by the forces of the Ice Age. Each lake has its own character and story.

Madum Sø

One of the region’s largest lakes and among Denmark’s cleanest bathing lakes. With its white sandy bottom and clear water, it is a popular summer destination for both swimmers and nature lovers. The walk around the lake is approximately 7 km and takes you through varied forest terrain.

Store Økssø

Set deep in the forest, Store Økssø is a dark yet clean lake. It is known for its iron-rich, tea-coloured water, which creates a beautiful contrast to the green trees surrounding it. The lake has good facilities, including a bathing jetty and a popular path all the way around. The path is approximately 2.8 km long.

Lindenborg Å and Valley

Lindenborg Å is a 47 km-long river, and its surroundings — approximately 1,000 hectares — are protected through Rold Forest and onwards through Gravlev Valley.

The river carries plenty of water, with a steady flow all year round, and drains an area of around 225 km².

  • Activities: The river is ideal for a peaceful canoe trip, bringing you close to the local wildlife.
  • Fishing: For anglers, the river is known for its good population of sea trout, which migrate towards the spring-fed waters to spawn.
