Store Blåkilde

Store Blåkilde was once considered the spring with the greatest water flow in the Rold Skov area — and therefore the largest spring in Denmark. More recent measurements, however, show that springs such as Gravlev Kilde, Lille Blåkilde and Ravnkilde have a greater water flow.

The main spring has a flow of around 80 litres per second. In some places, Store Blåkilde is listed as having a flow of approximately 300 litres per second, but this figure includes both the main spring and the many smaller springs in its outlet and nearby surroundings.

The clear blue water

Store Blåkilde is a typical basin spring. The basin is almost oval in shape, around 12 metres at its widest point and 4–5 metres deep.

The spring’s distinctive blue colour is due to the clear water, the light sandy bottom and the reflection of the sky. Parts of the bottom also consist of chalk, which enhances the bright, clean appearance. On a calm, sunny day, the sight of the spring is an experience in itself.

The name and local stories

Store Blåkilde most likely takes its name from its clear blue water. However, the name may also derive from “Blotkilde”, meaning a sacrificial spring.

According to local tradition, as late as the 19th century, the noblemen from nearby Villestrup Castle would throw silver coins into the spring before riding out to hunt.

Please protect the spring

Store Blåkilde is a protected natural site. This means that collecting animals and wading in the spring are strictly prohibited. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the spring from the bank and help protect this delicate natural area.
