Store Økssø Trail

The Store Økssø Trail is a peaceful and scenic walking route around Store Økssø in Rold Forest. Here, you walk close to the water, through woodland and past open views of the lake, which changes beautifully with the seasons.

The route is approx. 3 km long and waymarked. It has a firm, even gravel surface, only a gentle incline, and is suitable for walkers, wheelchair users, prams and pushchairs.

A classic walk in Rold Forest

The walk around Store Økssø is one of the short routes in Rold Forest that many visitors return to. Along the way, you may meet walkers, runners, swimmers, riders, cyclists and families enjoying a picnic.

Autumn is especially atmospheric, when the colours of the surrounding trees are reflected in the lake’s dark water. But Store Økssø is worth visiting all year round – from summer swims to fresh winter walks and winter bathing.

Close to the water all the way

Store Økssø is a brown-water lake, but the dark colour is not caused by pollution. It comes from natural humic substances from the surrounding peat areas.

The water is clean, and the lake is used for bathing in all seasons. By the lake, you will find a bathing jetty, places to sit and good opportunities to enjoy a break close to the water.

There are benches along the route, so you can slow down and enjoy the view.

An accessible trail for many visitors

The Store Økssø Trail is a good choice if you are looking for a short and manageable route in nature. The path is level, firm and even, with only a gentle incline.

At Mosskovpavillonen, you will find parking and an accessible toilet. From here, there is access under the railway through an accessible pedestrian tunnel and onwards towards the lake.

There is also an accessible fishing platform by the lake.
