Krems’s Beech stands west of Lille Økssø and is named after former forest ranger Thorvald Nielsen Krems. Combine your visit with a woodland walk to the nearby cypress and the Røverstuen sinkhole.
Krems’s Beech in Rold Forest
West of Lille Økssø, you will find Krems’s Beech – a distinctive tree surrounded by both local history and beautiful woodland scenery.
The beech is named after Thorvald Nielsen Krems (1898–1987), who worked as a forest ranger at Skelhus in the state-owned forest. The tree is approximately 125 years old and has a circumference of around 2.30 metres.
About 50 metres further west stands another of the forest’s impressive trees: a beautiful cypress. Walk roughly 200 metres in the opposite direction, and you will reach Røverstuen – one of the most striking sinkholes in Rold Forest. According to local legend, the notorious robbers of Rold once used it as their hideout.
How to find Krems’s Beech
You can find Krems’s Beech on the map of Rold Forest by following the route towards the Røverstuen sinkhole, marked as point 3 south of Store Økssø.
A good option is to park at Store Økssø and continue on foot along the forest paths. The walk gives you the chance to experience several of the forest’s distinctive trees and natural landmarks along the way.
