Hilly forest terrain, long forest roads and bridle trails through some of the area’s most beautiful landscapes await you.

Rold Skov offers excellent opportunities for exploring on horseback – whether you bring your own horse or join an organised riding tour. Along the way, you can get close to the forest’s natural surroundings and experience the landscape at a slower pace.

Rold Skov includes both state-owned and privately owned areas, so the rules for horseback riding may vary. Plan your trip in advance and follow the relevant riding maps and signs in the forest.

Horseback riding in Rold Skov

In the northern part of the state-owned Rold Skov, there are good opportunities for horseback riding, and the Danish Nature Agency’s general riding rules apply as a starting point. You may ride on paved and stone-surfaced roads, gravel roads wider than 2.5 metres, and on the forest floor where conditions allow. Riding is not permitted on burial mounds or other ancient monuments.

In the southern part of the state forest, different rules apply. Here, horseback riding is only permitted on the designated bridle trails, which are marked with a yellow horseshoe. This restriction is in place partly to protect the local wildlife.

The Danish Nature Agency provides riding maps for both the northern and southern parts of Rold Skov, which are useful when planning your trip.

Practical information before your ride

Before heading out into Rold Skov, it is a good idea to plan your route and check which rules apply in the part of the forest you will be riding in. Rold Skov includes both state-owned and privately owned areas, so access for riders may vary.

Download a riding map in advance and keep an eye on signs and waymarked bridle trails along the way. In the southern part of the state-owned forest, you must follow the designated riding trails marked with a yellow horseshoe.

Choose a route that suits both horse and rider, and take the weather and trail conditions into account. After heavy rain, the trails can become soft and vulnerable, so use the more robust forest roads and avoid unnecessary wear on the terrain.

Bring a phone with you, and let someone know where you are going if you are riding alone. Use the recommended parking areas if you arrive with a horse trailer.

Show consideration along the way

Rold Skov is shared by many different visitors. Slow down when you meet walkers, runners, cyclists and other riders, and take extra care where bridle trails cross other routes.

Follow the signs, ride only where permitted, and avoid sensitive areas. Take your litter with you and help protect the forest and its wildlife.
