Experience Rold Skov on horseback or enjoy a cosy horse-drawn carriage ride through the beautiful forest landscape. You can choose between different riding tours and carriage rides that bring you close to nature, history and some of the area’s special places.

Horse riding in Rold Skov

Three different riding tours are available: a short tour, a longer tour and a full-day tour. All tours are adapted to the riders’ level, and there must be a minimum of 2 participants.

Short riding tour

The short tour is approx. 6 km and takes you around Hesselholt Skov. The tour lasts around 1–1.5 hours.

Price: DKK 250 per person

Long riding tour

The long tour goes from Arden to Store Økssø, with the option of a break by the lake. The tour is approx. 12 km and takes around 2–2.5 hours.

Price: DKK 400 per person

Full-day tour

The full-day tour takes you to places such as Store Økssø, Ravnkilden, Rebild Bakker and several other locations in the area. The tour is around 20 km and lasts 5–6 hours, including breaks and full catering.

Price: DKK 900 per person

Horse-drawn carriage ride in Rold Skov

The horse-drawn carriage rides take place in the southern part of Rold Skov, departing from Arden. The route follows some of the forest’s beautiful forest roads and passes places such as Hvass Sø, the sinkholes Røverstuen and Hestegraven, and Lille Økssø Mose.

Along the way, you will hear stories about the nature, the area and the notorious robbers of Rold Skov – and perhaps a good anecdote or two.

At Lille Økssø Mose, there is a viewing tower with fine views of the rich wildlife in this part of the forest. The route also passes Mosskov-egen, a proud and upright oak tree by the clearing leading up to Store Økssø.

Store Økssø is a popular destination all year round. In summer, the lake is a popular place for swimming, and the walk around the lake is beautiful in every season – with fresh light-green beech trees in spring, warm red, brown and yellow colours in autumn, and winter bathers by the lake during the colder months.

It is possible to arrange a stop at Store Økssø if you have brought coffee, cake, lunch or drinks. This should be agreed with the driver before the tour starts, so the route and timing can be adjusted.

The carriage has room for 8–10 adults. Unfortunately, there is no room for wheelchairs, as the space between the benches is too narrow.
