Tyskerstenen and Lytteposten

On Sønderkol in Rebild Bakker, you can find one of the few remaining visible traces of the German listening post, which was established shortly after the occupation of Denmark in 1940. From here, German soldiers monitored air traffic over the area as part of the occupying forces’ warning system.

The listening post was manned throughout the Second World War. When enemy aircraft were observed, reports were passed on to the airfield in Aalborg. The soldiers lived and worked in wooden barracks on top of Sønderkol, and today you can still find an almost overgrown stone paving that once connected the buildings.

In the ravine between Nørrekol and Sønderkol lies Tyskerstenen. The stone originally stood by the listening post buildings and bears the inscription “Zum Andenken – Flug-Wache – Rebild 1940” as well as the carved outline of a German steel helmet.

After the liberation, the barracks and lookout tower were removed, and the stone was pushed down the slope by local residents. It still lies there today as a striking reminder of the area’s history during the occupation.
