Niels Erik Vangsted’s Memorial Stone

Niels Erik Vangsted’s Memorial Stone
In Rold Forest, you will find a publicly accessible memorial stone for resistance fighter Niels Erik Vangsted, who was killed by German forces on 18 August 1943.
Niels Erik Vangsted was buried at Ansgar Church in Aalborg. Between 10,000 and 15,000 people gathered outside the church to honour his memory, and the strong public support led the German occupying forces to disperse the crowd by force.
In response, Danes went on strike, and just six days later Denmark was declared under a state of emergency. The memorial site in Rold Forest therefore commemorates both Niels Erik Vangsted and the resistance and public solidarity that marked the years of occupation.
Niels Erik Vangsted’s memorial stone is marked as point of interest 10 on the map of Rold Forest.
