Urskoven in Rold Skov

The Ancient Woodland in Rold Skov is an old beech forest where nature is allowed to develop on its own terms. The forest has been designated as untouched woodland, which means that no trees are felled and no new trees are planted. When a tree falls or dies, it is left to become part of the forest’s natural cycle.

The forest is also known as Kyø Skov and is similar in age to Troldeskoven. Here, you will find old beech trees of the type that spread into Rold Skov during the Middle Ages, and the oldest trees are around 300 years old. Unlike Troldeskoven, however, there are not many multi-stemmed beeches here, partly due to the forest’s former ownership and use.

Today, the Ancient Woodland offers a special insight into how a forest slowly changes when nature is given more space. Dead wood, clearings, young shoots and old trunks gradually create a varied woodland with trees of many ages and sizes. This provides habitats for fungi, insects, birds and other species that thrive in a more natural forest.

The name Urskoven comes from forest ranger Jens Hvass, who is said to have needed a “primeval forest” for a scout exercise. The name has remained ever since, and today the area is an atmospheric place for nature lovers, walkers and families.

There is also a campfire site nearby with a grill and seating, which can be used freely. Please bring your own firewood and remember to clean up after your visit. If you are visiting the Ancient Woodland, you can park at the car park on Pumpevejen, about 1 km from the forest.
