The Stone Row in Nørreskoven

In the heart of Nørreskoven, you will find one of the area’s more unusual ancient monuments: a long row of stones believed to date back to the Bronze Age.

The stone row stretches for around 70 metres and consists of 29 clearly visible stones. It is located in an area where traces of the past are close at hand. Within a relatively small part of Nørreskoven, you can find long barrows, dolmens and several Bronze Age burial mounds.

What makes the stone row especially interesting is not only its size and regular shape. The row is aligned from northwest to southeast and points towards the place in Gravlev Ådal where the sun sets at the summer solstice.

For this reason, it is believed that the stone row may have served as a kind of solar calendar. It may have been connected to Bronze Age sun worship, the rhythm of the seasons and rituals linked to fertility.

It is also possible that the row was connected to the sunrise at the winter solstice, but the surrounding forest makes this difficult to determine with certainty.

Near the stone row, other fascinating structures have been found, including a stone circle with around 100 stones and a smaller circle with seven larger stones. This may suggest that the area once held special significance, although exactly how the structures were used is still unknown.

Parking and access

The nearest parking is by the lake on Rebild Kirkevej. From here, you can follow the yellow hiking route to the stone row and back again.

The Stone Row is marked as point 8 on the map of Rold Skov. Just a few hundred metres from the stone row, you will also find Lille Blåkilde, which is well worth including in your walk — remember to fill your water bottle with fresh water from the spring.
