The Forester’s Douglas Fir

South of Skørping and east of Møldrupvej, opposite the entrance to Mosskovgård, an impressive Douglas fir stands a short distance inside the forest. The tree is known as the Forester’s Douglas Fir.

The Forester’s Douglas Fir was once considered the tallest tree in the forest, although today it is matched by other trees, including those in Jætternes Baghave. In 1998, the fir measured approximately 40 metres in height and had a circumference of around 4.40 metres at chest height.

The tree was planted by forest ranger Hintz in memory of the well-known forester H.J. Hansen, who served as forest ranger in the district for 48 years. Beneath the tree rests the forester’s beloved Icelandic horse.

H.J. Hansen was also responsible for planting a small group of large Douglas firs by the car park near the entrance to the Danish Nature Agency Himmerland. These trees were sown as seeds in 1849 and are considered to be Denmark’s oldest Douglas firs.

The Forester’s Douglas Fir is marked as point of interest 11 on the map of Rold Skov.
