Thorup Church

Thorup Church is situated high and freely in the open landscape, where it clearly stands out in its surroundings. The church dates back to the Middle Ages and is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours.

The church tower was built in late Gothic style, while the porch to the north was added around 1900. In the early 1500s, the church was also given a narrow tower, decorated with initials and symbols from E. H. von Schimmelmann, who around 1800 was Denmark’s Minister of Finance and had ties to Lindenborg.

Inside the church, the altar table contains an empty saint’s grave. Both the pulpit and the altarpiece date from 1641. The altarpiece features the coats of arms of Margrethe Sandberg’s parents, who were connected to Tulsted Manor, while the painting on the altarpiece itself was added in 1722.

The chalice is a fine piece of silverwork from 1593. The church bell from 1893 is a recasting of the original bell from the 13th century.

The church can be visited by contacting the gravedigger.
