Sørup Church

Sørup is known to have had a church since the 15th century, but the original church was demolished sometime before 1700. Traces of the old church live on, however, as stones from it were reused in several places in the local area.

Among other things, stones from the church were used for a railway viaduct between Buderup and Gl. Skørping, built in 1869, and for an outbuilding at Sørupgård. One single stone was even given new life as a gravestone in the churchyard.

Around 1900, the wish for a new church in Sørup began to grow. The distance to Buderup Church was too great for the local community, and Buderup Church was also discontinued as an active church in 1907. The new church in Sørup was completed in 1906 and became a new gathering point for the area.

As is also known from the Romanesque church tradition, Sørup Church did not receive its tower until later. The tower was built in 1952 and completed the church’s present appearance.
