Øster Hornum Church
Øster Hornum Church is located in one of the oldest villages in the area and can be dated back to 1172.
The church has several distinctive architectural details. It was built to a length of 100 feet, but the south-facing wall is slightly longer than the north-facing one. As a result, the east gable is slightly skewed in relation to the church’s central axis.
In its original form, the church had only masonry benches along the walls. The baptismal font, which is still found in the church today, is the original one and was once placed centrally in the church interior.
The tower was added during a major reconstruction in the 15th century. It stands where the church once had a porch – a rare architectural feature seen in only a few other churches. The tower was originally intended to be built from ashlar stones, which were later used for bridges across the moat at St. Restrup.
Inside the church, you can see the altarpiece from the 16th century and the pulpit from 1604, which was made in Aalborg. The church also contains two oak figures from the 13th century, which are well worth noticing.
