Buderup Deserted Church

Buderup Deserted Church preserves many traces of the Middle Ages and the local history of the area. The church was built in several stages, and the chancel and nave were probably not constructed at the same time. The tower is the youngest addition and dates from the late Middle Ages. Inside the church, traces of early wall paintings can still be seen in several places.

The year 1761 is inscribed on the tower. It refers to the year when Niels Bjørn and Ida Cathrine Lassen of Buderupholm were married. The church chapel was built around 1500 and may have been intended as a burial place for Ivar Lykke and his wife from Buderupholm. The close connection with the manor is also visible in the churchyard, where several former owners of Buderupholm are buried.

The church was taken out of use in 1907 after new churches had been built in Sørup and Støvring. For many members of the congregation, the journey to Buderup had simply become too long. Some of the church furnishings were therefore transferred to other churches. The pulpit and altarpiece went to Suldrup Church, while the church silver and other objects were moved to Støvring. Today, the original baptismal font and a built-in altar can still be seen in Buderup Deserted Church.

The area around the church was protected in 1951, and the church is now owned by the Danish Nature Agency. It is used for cultural events and exhibitions, among other activities.

The church is not open to the public, but it can be rented for events.
